With a sword in hand and guns at your side, you are ready to hunt some demons!
(3.5 out of 5) Story: In Devil May Cry you play as Dante, a demon slayer some people would call him. He is visited by a mysterious woman named Trish who offers him an odd job. Being cool Dante accepts her job and finds himself on an island full of demonic monsters, psycho puppets, and even gigantic spiders. What starts as an odd job ends up being Dante's destiny to save the world from being taken by the devil. I thought the story was pretty interesting, but I thought there was a lack of cut scenes in which to tell the story. It seems to me that Devil May Cry is more action based then story based. I'm not saying thats a bad thing, but Devil May Cry still could have talked a little more about the story. Many games have some climatic ending, but I felt that Devil May Cry's ending was a bit rushed, it just happened too quickly, ah well. (5 out of 5) Gameplay: Devil May Cry's gameplay is top notch. The smooth fighting system, the awesome line of combos, the nice arsenal of weapons, the quick and dynamic gameplay, it was all fantastic. The use of guns was especially fun, I mean who doesn't love flipping in mid air while shooting an array of bullets at a demonic puppet, I'll tell you, no one. The difficulty of the game is extremely hard, it may take countless tries to proceed to the next level or defeat a boss, whats even worse is that you have a certain number of lives. I also didn't like the fact that you had to do a fair amount of backtracking to proceed in the game. With that stuff set aside Devil May Cry sets the bar for gameplay in all action games to come.
(5 out of 5) Graphics: For a pretty old Playstation 2 game the graphics were well done. From chracter designs to environments. Everything around you had an incredible amount of detail, the atmosphere became tense when you walked in a dark hallway, you would get excited when you walked into the coliseum, if graphics can do those kind of things to you then you know the game is good, very good.
(5 out of 5) Sound: The sound was well...... incredible. The music goes well with all the fights in the game. When you are doing awesome, cool, techniques on a demon you need awesome, cool music right, yeah I know I'm right. Devil May Cry does just that. The sound effects sound realistic and gives tension to the game, without the loud obnoxious lightning sound, the creepy hallways would lose its creepyness. Devil May Cry masters the art of sound.
Overall: Devil May Cry is a great game, and if you haven't played it do yourself a favor and play it. If you enjoy the God of War series then you will most definitely enjoy Devil May Cry. With its fast gameplay, good graphics, and incredible sound effects/music Devil May Cry is a must get for PS2 owners everywhere. The game may take five hours or less to beat, but the shortness of the game doesn't take away the sweetness of the game.
