There are 5 characters Sorceress, Paladin, Barbarian, Necromancer, and Amazon and in LOD there are 7 with the addition of the Assassin, and Druid.
Each character has unique skills, these are usually one of the defining traits of Diablo 2 and LOD. These are what your characters really need or the game will just be plain unbeatable. Each character has 30 different skills and all unique to each class such as Shapeshifting or Elemental Magic, or even Curses.

This is the next part of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 and I think you should own this game to your game collection
