User Rating: 9.3 | Die Hard Trilogy PS
Die Hard Trilogy comes courtesy of Probe Entertainment, a fairly new developer under the watchful eye of Fox Interactive. Most players would have heard of Die Hard, the movie that really put actor Bruce Willis into the spotlight, and the game, or games, (however you see them), really bring the action, intensity and firepower that the movie series is renowned for, to the Playstation. First of all, this is not your ordinary game. Having the licence to 3 movies, Probe have done the unthinkable and created 3 seperate game styles for each respective movie. The first one, Die Hard, takes place in the Nakatomi Plaza as seen in the movie, and sees you play as a third person shooter throughout 15 levels, killing many bad guys in the way. This is made better with things like grenades and gas bombs, and after you kill everybody in the level, you must race to a central point to disarm a bomb. Its great fun, and while slightly repetitive is just one third of the overall great package. The second part of the game - Die Hard 2: Die Harder, has you taking on the Dulles International Airport, as well as other locations in a first person shooter. This is admittedly the best part of the game, and will task you to take down as many bad guys as possible, while trying to survive yourself. This mode feels like Virtua Cop mixed with the movie Die Hard, with lots of action and bullets. Its a lot of fun. The third part is of the most recent film in the series - Die Hard with a Vengeance. This tasks you as a Cab driver (as seen in the film) racing around a well realised New York trying to ram other cars before the timer goes out and the bombs explode. Its a well thought out and well played mode and decidedly different from the other 2. It is rather violent though, with John McClane swearing his mouth off and blood spatter going across your windscreen when you accidently knock down civilians. And then there is the windscreen wiper effect. Graphics are for the most part good. Having 3 seperate engines powering the game isn't easy and Probe have done a commendable effort in making the game look as well as it plays. Sound is of the minimal effect, but all the Sound Bites you remember from the movies are here, such as the catchcry "Yippie-kai-ay". Music is acceptable, but when this game came out, it was when music was only just starting to become more important to gaming. Die Hard Trilogy is an example of games going in a more adult direction then they were previously with sound. A quick note to be mentioned should be that the games are not all that easy. It will give you a good hard challenge, and it is adviseable you save often. These 3 games are so good they can easily be sold on their own, and yet are packaged together for your gaming enjoyment. Although the game is very adult in nature, the gameplay is a lot of fun and I urge anyone out there that if they enjoy playing games, that they should look into this. Great fun, and probably the best movie based licence ever until Goldeneye on the N64. Yippie-kai-ay!
