Die Hard Trilogy comes to the Saturn. But sadly, it doesn't perform well on the Saturn as it did on the Playstation.
This game contains 3 mini game to play in. They all are based on the 3 Die Hard movies. The 1st mini game, Die Hard, is a third-person shooter that has the atmosphere like the first Die Hard movie. You go on many floors of the building, so it could take a while to beat it. You can always save if you don't feel like beating it in a day. The controls in this mini game are slightly hard and awkward. It can be a pain to aim where you're shooting at. And it can be hard to enter in some rooms. The controls of Die Hard are passible, but there's definitly some issues with it. But hopefully you'll get used to it. The 2nd mini game, Die Harder, is a Virtua Cop style of gameplay. It's almost plays exaclty like Virtua Cop, except different weapons and areas. This is probably the worst mini game of the 3. The controls are really slopy and messed up, its almost unplayable for some gamers. Its also a hard mini-game, thanks to the messed up controls, that the only way you can beat the game easily is by using the game's cheats. If you don't want a slopy controled hard mini-game that has many issues, then maybe you should avoid even playing this mini-game. The 3rd mini game, Die Hard: With a Vengence, is a crazy driving game. You drive around the streets to defuse bombs before the time goes off. This mini game isn't quite as hard as Die Harder, but it's not easy ether. Other then those 3 mini games, that's all Die Hard Trilogy offers. The game's controls could have been better to save itself from being a horrible port to the Saturn.
Graphics:
The conversion of Die Hard Trilogy from the Playstation to the Saturn was a failiure. The Saturn version's graphics are worse then the Playstation. The 3D character models are really choppy and messy. The framerate is also a mess up. Many times in the game, you'll encounter super slow framerate. All the mini-games are bad-looking, even for a Saturn game. I'll explain the framerate issues for each mini-game. Die Hard has quite a couple framerate slowdowns in most of the levels. They aren't great, but they also aren't terrible. If you can handle some slow framerate everynow and then, Die Hard won't be a bad ride for you then. Die Harder is absolutly the worst looking mini-game out of the three. Many of the graphics are choppy, messy, and at times, show blocks. This mini-game is definitly not pretty to look at. The framerate slows down alot here, and when it does, its so slow, its almost unplayable, or in other words, a nearly frozen speed. If all of Die Hard Trilogy's graphics were like this, Then I'd give the game's graphics a 2 rather then a 3. Die Hard: With a Vengence is also pretty ugly, but not as bad as Die Harder. Overall, this is an ugly Saturn game that would not impress any graphics lover.
Sound:
In my opinion, the music a good enough for a type of game like Die Hard Trilogy and I found a few good songs as well. The music score features some rock, techno, and even some horror in some cases. The game sound effects are pretty good too. The voice acting is the main issue of the game. Many of the voices aren't good. In fact, there are times when the voices change some pitches in different mini-games. So Die Hard Trilogy features good music and sound effects, but mediocre voice acting.
Conclusion:
Overall, Die Hard Trilogy is a mixed type of game thanks to the flaws in the graphics and the controls. Also, thanks to the at times annoying frame rate, the Saturn port of Die Hard Trilogy is less enjoyable then the Playstation one. Unless you're a die hard Die Hard fan and a huge Saturn fan, the Saturn port isn't recommended over the Playstation version. Probe, the late developers behind this and Alien Trilogy, did not give the Saturn port of Die Hard Trilogy as much respect as it could've gotton. They gave the Saturn a decent port of Alien Trilogy, but why not Die Hard Trilogy? Ether they were just too lazy, or they had to rush through the game before the end of 1996. (Saturn and PC ports of this game were releassed in December 96') Ether way, they turned a very good action game into a mixed action game with good parts, but also lame parts as well.
Pros:
-Nice third-person shooter mini-game
-So-so car driving mini-game
-Nice music
Cons:
-Awkward control layout, and bad way of moving your character around.
-Ugly graphics (Even for a Saturn game)
-Die Harder mini-game is almost unplayable with its horrible frame rate problems.
-Some bad voices here and there.
