My Thoughts on Disney Infinity 2.0

User Rating: 8 | Disney Infinity 2.0 Edition (Marvel Super Heroes) PS3

Please keep in mind that my review is limited to everything included in the starter pack. I have not purchased any of the other available play sets (story lines) or characters.

I was lucky enough to purchase the starter pack for Disney Infinity 2.0 on sale for $25. This starter pack was, unfortunately digital, so I didn't receive any of the neat physical figurines of the three Avengers characters you are given. This kit also comes with the Avengers play set and, of course, access to the sandbox elements of the game. Since we're on the topic, let's clarify that you CANNOT play all the characters and you CANNOT unlock them with any sort of in-game achievement. You are forced to purchase each individual character, much like Skylanders. Oh, and guess what? The same goes for the different story lines (which are called play sets). To unlock every single feature of Disney Infinity 2.0, it would cost you over $100 IN ADDITION to the price of the starter pack.

Normally, something like that would aggravate me to no end... But, I believe the amount of fun I had playing through what I was given was a sufficient band-aid. The game play is extremely repetitive and not at all challenging, yet addictive. Who doesn't want to smash frost giants with Thor's mighty hammer? The Avengers play set is very short. I beat it in about 7 hours. Over all there are about three encounters with Loki and his icy companions that are mid-core at best. Outside of that, you can play as your favorite character on player created maps made in the Toybox (or, you know, sandbox). There are also alternative game modes that utilize strategy defense game play or top down action. You can even create your own maps with structures that you can purchase with the in-game currency.

I've done quite a bit of blabbing so far. So, allow me to answer the question: Is this a game I should own? If you're a hardcore gamer who craves adversity and challenge... Absolutely not. If you dig superheroes and can get over casual combat, absolutely. If you enjoy sandbox style games where you can build things, then probably. If you are younger and close to the movies of you childhood, absolutely.

Overall, very fun game. Perhaps not worth $50 unless you're a kid.
