For new people to the series, this is a perfect time to get into this game. The game takes you from the beginning of who Dante is. There are flamboyant cutscenes, over the top characters and amazing boss battles to face. The lets you control Dante in this hack and slash game, with platforming elements.
The core gameplay is based on a solid fundation. The game throws you new ways to tackle the game. It doesn't tell you how to play the game. It rather gives you several options to take down enemies during the game. There also a lot of different enemies to take down. It isn't just mundane slashing. You may want to put some strategy into how you play the game. It sends you curvballs all the way. The boss battles are also a view to behold. These are events that really stand out. The last time i felt this excited during boss battles were during God of War. The spectacle and scale is just amazing to look at. They are amazing to play aswell, you get a great feeling of mastering them. The level design is also amazing, from platforming to slashing enemies. There's just so much to do.
The story takes you from a cocky Dante, who's sleeping around and living life. To saving the world and finding out about his origin and his family. You have three main characters from Dante, Vergil and Kat. Kat is probably less fleshed out character, but supports Vergil and the main character. You get a sense during the story that something is not quite right aswell. So the plot twist is subtle at some points, but if you haven't played the series you might not see it coming. I personally saw hints of it during the game, so it wasn't totally taking me of guard.
Sound design is well crafted by the team. You really feel that slashes and the smashes in the game. The voice casting support this by doing excellent voice over. They didn't get a whole lot to work with. But they managed to get the story through.
The design of the game looks great and fits the gameplay well. The bosses look different, and stand out compared to regular enemies. The regular enemies don't look so generic either, that you don't see the difference between them. The framerate never dropped during my gameplay and always played smooth. There were never any stutters or bugs that i encountered at any time in the game.
The singleplayer lasts around 10 hours, where you can play longer and again if you want to try on harder difficulties or get all collectibles. This game is totally worth it if you want to check out the hack and slash genre and if you're unfamiliar with the story.
The story introduces you to a whole other world where you don't know what's going on. The story does a good job in explaining why you're doing things. The game also explains to you how to play, but not handholding either. The gameplay takes center stage. It back it up with massive boss battles and great level design. You don't get tired of slashing demons at any point in the game.
