The original Donkey Kong on the Game Boy may have been overlooked due to Donkey Kong Land, but it's still fun.

I remember playing this game as a kid, all those frustrating but ultimately rewarding hours spent taking down Donkey Kong. That's right, just like in the classic, you play as Mario and have to save some...woman, not Princess Peach, from the big ape. The game starts quite clever with a remake of some of the original levels from the arcade version, where the object is to get to the top of the screen while avoiding the barrels and other obstacles that's hurled at you, then it shifts and becomes something different, there are multiple levels, from deserts, to mountain to a ship and a plane among others. The main object in the levels is to collect a big key and then carry it to the exit door, which can be harder said than done in the later stages with hazards all over the place. The bosses vary, the first one in each stage is usually to get to the top of the screen, but the last in each level is all about throwing the barrels right back in DK's face. The boss fights, including the very last one, which is a bit different, but the object's the same, are not that challenging, but the levels, man, I remember how annoying some could be, and still are. But most are not that challenging once you finally figure out the solution to the puzzles. The later stages can be a bit of a drag, especially the mountain stage which has 12 levels in it and 4 boss fights, even more than the final Tower stage. The game looks pretty good, especially the animations on Donkey Kong, music is a bit more hit and miss but stellar overall. I have no idea if this game is gonna be available for download on the 3DS channel or whatever, but if you have the chance, you could check it out.
