Upgrade your DKC!

User Rating: 8.3 | Super Donkey Kong 2: Dixie & Diddy SNES
The first DKC literally blew my fragile, undeveloped cerebral cortex. The joyous pre-rendered goodness sent chills down my 12-year old spine and solidified Rare as my video game developer of choice. Of course, perception changes drastically with time. Rareware has lost some of its sheen and graphics no longer take the forefront as a far as my taste is concerned. Upon playing through the first game again, I found the gameplay wasn't so bad (although rudimentary) and the pretty does help energize the player. I skipped out on the second DKC venture in my youth, but now can report my findings as an older gent.

The creativity in level design is upped substantially with DKC 2. Mine Carts levels are converted into complex races with large phantom dinosaurs and thorns (a staple in the first DKC) become the accoutrement of barrelscapes. It's exhilarating, annoying, and addictive. Obviously, the production quality has returned as well. The music and graphics are unparalleled and this just further enhances the overall experience. I was shocked by how much better Diddy was in comparison to Donkey. Notwithstanding is the difficulty. Those unfamiliar with platforming may find DKC 2 incredibly exhausting. Multiple tries and memorization are crucial. But, there are numerous rewards for the dedicated. Hidden levels galore, secrets abound, and quite a bit of collectibles await the willing.

The VC is rife with filth...but DKC 2 is most certainly not so. Given the high price of the DKC SNES cart nowadays, the eight dollar price tag is ridiculously fair. I'm glad I had a chance to play through number two. Give her a whirl.
