Donkey see, Donkey do!
retrieve...what else? His bananas naturally. This time a new enemy threatens
the jungle, but I won't spoil the rest.
The game is unexpectedly challenging and lengthy and all levels are
carefully designed. At the same time, the visual part manages to preserve
the classic look of a Donkey Kong game, while a unique artistic touch is
given to provide the illusion of 3D at certain points. The gameplay features
clever mechanics plus you are often given the opportunity to ride a variety
of vehicles throughout the game.
Once more, there is a co-op mode available, as the second player takes
control of Diddy Kong, but this time you play with your friend at the same
time. There is also a noticeable change in Diddy Kong's gear. He now has a
jet pack which enables him to hover in the air for a while, an addition
that rather suits a less experienced player.
As far as the negatives of the game are concerned, the controls are
occasionally not accurate, which makes the whole experience a little
annoying from time to time. Perhaps if you play the game with a classic
controller instead of a Wii remote you may be less frustrated. One more
thing. I personally preferred Donkey's running animation in the original
SNES title, but it is really a minor factor.
Donkey Kong Country Returns is most welcome from the majority of the fans,
but I strongly believe that many consider the original game far more
innovative and revolutionary.
