In a surprise move, DOOM is quick to impress and quicker to bring you on a trip down memory lane.
The control scheme is a little odd, since it's a hybrid of recent FPS games, it's two-stick controlled, but the right stick only moves left and right, you don't aim. This took some adjustment time, but not having to aim is pretty easy. Everything else is intact and makes sense...Though, it's harder to scroll through your weapons than it is to hit the numerical value assigned to them.
The bouncy walk is still there, and is disorienting since, again, this is more or less done away with in current FPS games. It's incredible to see how much the genre has changed in such a short time...So far all the sound effects, level design and graphics are totally true to the original, even the whacky metal riff soundtracks.
Possibly the best addition, which was left out of the version that came packed with Doom 3, is multiplayer AND co-op. Yes, even on Xbox Live. It's fun, frantic and I didn't catch a lick of slowdown in the matches I played...But that's not to say you won't stumble on some. Leaderboards are there as well, which is fun to see singleplayer scores on a game that was just released.
Achievement points are all fair and worthy of being called "achievements". There are some for completing story lines, killing all enemies, finding all items, finding a secret room, playing on harder difficulty and then the multiplayer kills. Nothing impossible, nothing too easy, like say, Galaga.
Overall, I have walked away from my DOOM experience on the 360 with nothing but good things to say. If you can get past the 800 point ($10) price tag for a game this old that you may have played numerous times in numerous forms, it's a must for any fan of the series or anyone looking for a MUCH different game than anything else on the Marketplace today. Having multiplayer alone has gotta be worth most of the price of admission...
