Back to The FPS Roots
This was the game that started the craze with First Person Shooters in the first place and got me into it. It was also one of the first games to display some extreme violence (enemies turning into meaty junks after being blasted by the RPG).
Its a very solid and easy game to pick up and play. It only gets harder as the levels progress, giving you more enemies on the screen at one time, and enemies with more health. As long as you are always on your toes, you shouldn't have any problems annihilating everyone.
Those looking for storyline, won't find it here. This is just a run and gun game with the whole emphasize on just picking that controller up and busting some heads. Its great to put my mind to mush, have no real point to the game, and to just destroy some demons versus some of the newer games that require some thinking.
Keeping me from giving this game a good overall score was the graphics. I had no choice but to rate this low because its not up to par with newer FPS titles and features much more 2D graphics. I put a 9 for sound, because for veteran gamers, the sounds of Doom are unmistakable. This really made the game well, and there is nothing better than hearing the whines of an Imp. Brings back memories.
I put the difficulty as Easy, because the controls are entirely too simple to figure out compared to newer games. Newer FPS titles require you to figure out enemy AI and special ways of defeating an enemy ("this guy has a shield, so I have to aim a little to the right to hit his arm"). In this game, you just pay attention to your movement and shooting, nothing more.
I'm very disappointed with the fact that there is no Doom 2 and Final Doom with this one. It won't be surprising if the other two come out eventually, but that means having to pay more money (Doom 2 and Final Doom are about the same as Doom (same graphics engine), it just has more episodes, and Final Doom takes place in Hell, instead of on space stations).
I think the wider audience for this game will be the veteran gamers out there who lived to play this one, but I think its great for those curious of what the first First Person Shooters were like. Most people will be familiar with the title of this game because of the similiar titled Doom 3.
Now, all they need to do is bring Duke Nukem 3D back.
