The greatest old-school first-person shooter ever made, Doom pleases almost anyone who tries the classic.
I was 4 years old when my father first bought it. I still remember going to the game store with him for my first time just to buy this game. It's surprising that he would show me it let alone let me watch, but I'm glad he did or I might not have turned out to love Doom the way I do now.
I have only recently picked it up after 10 years of withdrawal, but now I'm addicted again. I also remember having been afraid of it, but I always came back to watch again. That's the signs of a true horror game.
It's amazing how a game in such a genre could wind up still famous and just as fun as it was, 13 years later. But it's not amazing how the game that did this was Doom.
The only problems I've found with Doom is the graphics. It may be over a dozen years old, but I think that a game that's been this great for this long needs newer and better graphics. It may be just enough to make the game fun and playable, but seriously, id Software should either update with new graphics or work on a remake. Although this is most likely not going to happen, I think this game has been made beyond it's full potential.
Doom is also available now by downloading. The problem with this is that all sound was lost. Music, sound effects, all gone. Though it's not necessary, it's the most important thing needed in a horror game besides darkness and creatures.
The sound in the original Doom, the one gamers had to buy, the sound was great but nowhere near perfect. There were a few bugs and jumps between effects, and it wasn't the greatest quality, but it still made the cut as being excellent.
Even in the earlier editions, I can't remember anything wrong with the controls. No bugs, glitches, no mistakes. This made Doom one of the best-working computer games ever. The gameplay is perfect.
There are three episodes in Doom: Knee-Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell, and Inferno. All three are amazing, and they are nearly perfect overall. Each episode takes place in a new area, but I don't want to spoil the small percentage of plot this game has, so I'll leave it to you to find out.
There really isn't a story though, just a bunch of pointlessly fun weapons to shoot monsters up with. But this much I can tell you: each episode has an ending. It's up to you to reach for that goal to see the ending of each. Let me say that it's a great experience to see Inferno's ending. But that's not the end of the fun. No, there's always the possibility of trying to get 100% completion, or even trying to finish the game within each level's Par.
Newer versions of the game even have multiplayer. Deathmatch is a lot of fun to play, and I'm sure that plenty of people still play on the servers. I'm not too sure, but I think that Doom was the first multiplayer FPS. (Don't sue me if I'm wrong.) If it is, that makes Doom even better.
Shortly released after Doom came the Doom WADs. These are map editors that allow you to make your own levels, as well as weapons, enemies, and even storylines! This takes a lot of time to do, and few computers actually have the ability to run it, but in the end that doesn't even matter.
The original game comes with five difficulty levels, including the ever-popular "Nightmare!" difficulty. Each difficulty is better than the last, and also allows players to find new places not found in the easier ones. Nightmare is my personal favorite, as it is the hardest and quickly turns against you in an excellent massacre.
The game starts off right away, with no loading, no cutscenes, and unfortunately no tutorial. But the controls are easy to master, and it doesn't take long. Very few games nowadays put you right into the action without having at least a minute or two of the "important" stuff. But Doom proves the other games wrong about how important cutscenes and tutorials are. The important things in a game is to set a goal and have fun!
In my opinion, and in the opinion of many others, Doom is the greatest old-school first-person shooter ever made. Overall, Doom is a great game for anyone who can enjoy the best gorefest of 1993.
