Outstanding gameplay, the story is out of this world...literally!
Story
The story starts as you, as a nameless Marine, called to Mars to take care of a few strange happenings, or assist in helping fix it for that matter.
When you reach the base, you have to go through some bio-scans, PDA tutorials and more.
As you make your way through the base, you talk to some people and you soon find out, somethings not right. You might come up to numerous people and they will give you their ideas of what is happening at the base.
For years, the Doom story has been nearly the same. THe main company in this game is the UAC (United Aerospace Corporation) and they have been conducting some teleportation experiments, and I'm sure as you have heard many times, demons are teleported to the base from hell.
That's not EXACTLY the truth about the teleportation part of the story, but, if we gave it away, what was the point of buying the game?
The story is amazing and really does draw you into the game, and you could easily compare it to storylines such as Halo and Halo 2.
Gameplay
The gamplay for the two original Dooms have always been some of the best we have seen...and Doom III is no exception. While, some of the spawning demons are sometimes, very repetitive, the gamplay will keep you coming back.
All the weapons from the original Doom are in the third instillment, Doom III, along with new weapons. Of course the BFG9000 is in the game.
It is a blast to have to go on screens and click buttons to make some doors instead of just have them open for you. Sometimes you will need to find some cars or PDA's to acquire access to restricted areas. These are usually quite easy to find, but you may find yourself having to have to go back a considerable amount to find them.
Sometimes you will have to use a crane to get across areas or get rid of gas cannisters to enter the room, this is fun, but it might be an annoyance for hard core FPS fans who just want to run `n gun down enemies.
Overall the gameplay is stunning, definately a great experience in this one.
Sound
The sound is amazing, it will really draw you into the experience, you are able to have true 6-channel surround sound, which realy ups the experience.
One major dissapointment is that if you take a shot with a shotgun, or any other gun, it's the same shot and reload sound over and over again, very noticable.
Also the weapons aren't very loud at all and done sound as powerful as they should.
The sound is amazing overall, you can hear shrieks of enemies before you can see them, and it really draws you into the entire game. The Dolby 6-channel Surround Sound ups the experience as well.
Graphics
Wow. Even though the graphics aren't as good as the game's PC counterpart...wow.
The graphics will make you look around an just make you awe in amazement. All the lights and shadows, thanks to a little "Carmack magic" look stunning, when an enemy passes through a little patch of light, you can see the crevices of where the light cannot reach, and where the shadow is, and it's done all so well.
While there are some places that look like N64 graphics, the game looks great and it's highly understanable that the Xbox graphics would be downgraded. It can;t handle the PC's requirements.
Overall Doom III is an amazing game, every aspect of the game has it's areas that will astound you. This game is quite frightening, so play in a 1 AM, surround sound up to 50, turn off the lights, and be prepared to pay the most frightening game ever made.
*for ten extra bucks, get the Collector's Edition, packed with features, such as interviews, and of course both original Dooms, with multiplayer!
