One of the biggest positive suprises of 2005 for the Xbox, Surpassing my expectations for the game and then some.

User Rating: 9.1 | DOOM 3 XBOX
I am no PC gamer, I have a solid PC at home to sync up with work, but for the most part I spend my day in front or around PC's and therefore can never truly enjoy games on PC at home, I gave Doom 3 a try when it was originally released on PC, and as impressed as I was I couldn't get into it. Then the Xbox version was released, and after laying out on the sofa and turning up the surround just right, I can see what all the buzz was about. Graphically, it was though I had almost forgot that Xbox was able to produce such quality, after Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube, and GOW on PS2, it was easy to forget that Xbox has the superior hardware, well Doom 3 is just the reminder I needed. The beauty of the actual levels is simply stunning and I will go as far as to say nothing I have seen this far on consoles can even come close to this, It is a graphical masterpiece. The design of the majority of the enemies is also well done without giving too much away there will be some "Bosses" where you will simply be taken back by the detail and work done to make these things look as creepy as they do. There are also some segments of the game where you will experience hallucinations and the work done to detail the enviroment you witness is really really first rate, As much as I hate to give perfect scores on graphics this in my opinion is the best game from a graphic standpoint thus far in 2005 and is worthy of said score. Gameplay is a touch more dated and I really did have an issue with it. Its not that it was hard to get used to, it was simply annoying to have to get back into that late 1990's mentality when playing a game with dated gameplay. Once you get over it its fairly servicable and you start to remember why games like Doom and Wolfenstein were cool in the first place and you start to get into the groove and from that point on you are content with the controls or at least I was. I found the storyline to be a touch strange, but more so because alot of games now center around your main character and the plot usually revolves around him or her, but since you are nameless and rather generic it does not and the game centers around other people who you normally do not get a chance to interact with directly but rather though recordings and messages. Needless to say the story and delivery of the story and some rather strange gaps in the stories timeline left me somewhat letdown, but the non stop action made up for any short comings on that end. Even with the XBox support of true surround sound, there is really nothing new here. I found alot of the weapons to sound similar at times, which is forgiven because there are so many of them, but even the power of the weapon in some cases did not match up to the rather meek sound it gave out, your enemies as per usual sound rather cool but it gets stale after a while, The developers have made some uses of the 5.1 setup and did give the gamer a truly "Surrounded" enviroment, but it has been done better in other games and there is just not enough new here to make me overly impressed. Most games have their weakpoints and this is simply Doom's and it always has been, even though its taking steps in the right direction. There is no question that this game has tons of value to it, the singleplayer mode is well done and interesting and should take most people a fair amount of time, but the best aspect I have found thus far is the Co-op, a really good multiplayer mode that is simply fun, and for the most part did not seem to get stale after time passed, you can select any of the single player levels for Co-op which is awesome, and that alone just packs on tons of time onto this game. For those with Live or a System Link and a System to Link to, you are in for an awesome treat, I found that Live was getting a touch stale and I found myself tired of Halo 2 and Crimson Skies (My two lives games of choice) that I was playing Power Drome to kill time online, and now with Doom 3 it provides alot more satifaction out of my 50 bucks a year for live, but is hardly required to enjoy this game multiplayer. Overall, Its nice to get that PC edge on a console, And I have to admit that this is the most fun I have had with a multiplayer game since Goldeneye and the days of N64. It is a nice simple multiplayer that doesn't require the player to have to learn a complex gameplay engine to play and be somewhat of a challenge, which is great for when you have friends over. Perhaps not the best overall game of 2005 for me, but without a doubt the most fun out of a game thus far in 2005 -Z
