Doom 3 offers nothing new or revolutionary in terms of first person shooters. The gameplay is pretty standard, the weapons are unremarkable. Where this game raises the bar is terms of the overall experience it gives the player. That experience is summed up in one word...terror. This game scares the crap out of me. I'm 28 years old and it scares the crap out of me. I can only play it in small doses because it's that intense. The way the game achieves the intensity is multi-faceted, but centers around it's use of sound, lighting, surprise, and outstanding graphics. The sound of the machines, the echo of the hallways, the sound of light fixtures humming away...it creates an environment that never lets up in terms of suspense and fear. That being said, I can't cite too many other games that provide such a unique experience. Good work ID.
