Doom 3 is one of the best looking games to play on the xbox, but the rest of the game isnt as good as the good graphics.
With the exception of the new Xbox 360, most games now look better on top of the line pcs than they do on the consoles. Doom 3 doesn't look quite as good on the xbox as it does on the pc, but it is one of the best looking games to get on the xbox. The visual effects in the game are just amazing, and only if you look closely you can hardly notice a drop in the frame rate when a lot of stuff is happening. Even though everything in the environment is only generic, which is a little dissappointing, it still looks very good. Lighting and shadows not only look very good, but play a big role in the game. The enemies and other characers, including weapons, also look outstanding. If you are hoping to see a lot of gore in this game, you will get plenty to see. When you fire the shotgun right into an imp that is standing right in front of you you will see blood fly. The only thing that could be better is if they had blood accumilate on the tv screen. While the game looks outstanding, the rest of the game doesn't live up to it.
The gameplay in Doom 3 is good but not great. Doom 3 brings back the old style of fps shooters when the style of gaming first started. So in more ways its bad more than good. Most of the time you're walking in hallways and corridors fighting enemies 1v1, 2v1, or 3v1. You don't really encounter many big battles until late in the game. So since you are just walking through hallways only fighting enemies here and there, it does get repetitive pretty fast. The only good thing out of that is that its pretty straight forward to know where you need to go so its hard to get lost. Also nearly all of the objectives in the game are the same. Every single level you just need to fight your way through to get to the next level or find a person's pda to unlock a door. The middle portion of the game was the most boring for me. Early in the game you're first learning how to play and you don't have a lot of good weapons to fight with and very little ammo so it makes things pretty interesting. Whereas in the end you have a wide variety of enemies and a lot of weapons to choose from and some enemies are tough to take down even with the better weapons. In the middle of the game you dont have a lot of newer and tougher enemies but you have strong weapons to take them out with. It makes it easy and you feel like you are just fighting to get to the good parts of the game. It is worth the wait though because once you get teleported to hell things get very interesting. But, it takes about 15 to 20 hours to comeplete the champaign in Doom 3 but it almost feels like about 5 hours of useless running around could have been taken out.
Doom 3 not only looks very good, it sounds very good as well. The only bad thing about the sound is the weapons, they don't sound as powerful as they really are. Since most of the fighting in Doom 3 was close combat the shotgun became my best friend in the game, it had a lot of power in it cause it took most enemies out with only a couple of blasts but it had a wimpy sound to it. Other than the weapons the sound is really great. The first time you hear the roar of a new enemy it sounds really spooky. You do get familiar with the sounds and overall they all sound great and every enemy has a distinct battle cry.
Doom 3 is a great game to play, and one of the best looking games to play on the xbox. If you're not a fan of doom or even don't like shooting games you should at least play the game for its great visual and sound effects. But like most of the foes in the game, its bark is worst than its bite.
