Not a FPS, more of a First Person Where's the Lights?

User Rating: 6 | DOOM 3 XBOX
Beign a huge fan of the original Doom, my expectations were high...maybe too high. This Xbox version of Doom 3 certainly letf me disappointed.
PROS: The graphics are beautiful, maybe the best on the Xbox (and that incldues Halo).
The monsters come in a wide variety, including new ones not included in the original Doom.
There is also a good variety of weapons, mostly re-hashed from the original game. The addition of grenades was a great idea.
The sound effects and music are very well done, and help create a spooky mood. Still not as atmospheric as the orginal, though.
CONS: First off, the biggest problem is the lighting effects. There are areas of the game which are ABSOLUTELY PITCH BLACK, and while you are trying to find out what's biting you in the leg, you're also fumbling for your flashlight and wasting ammo hitting nothing.
The only flashlight in the game is seprate from your weapons, so you can't see and shoot at the same time. Absolutely stupid. Each weapon should have had a light connected to it.
Second, the game is extremely cheap and dirty. Ambushes from nowhere, cheap shots in the back, monsters who know exactly where you are although you can't see them, monsters only come after you when you're re-loading etc.
Thirdly, many of the weapons from the original game have lost their importance in this one. For instance the shotgun is slow, weak and inaccurate, whereas in the original game it was a staple of the Marine.
I really REALLY wanted to like this game, but I found it mediocre at best. I paid $20 for it, and felt that I probably paid too much.
