The very best DOOM there is... absolutely no question about it. Don't let the low site score make you think otherwise.

Apon completion of an exceptionally well done game, its formal to do a review of it. Today we'll be talking about Doom, or DOOM. Everyone knows doom, played it, seen it, or at least heard of it. It pioneered the multiplayer deathmatch and gave gamers a gun, fists, chainsaws, and a whole ton of enemies to waste back in the year of 1993. By 1994 Doom 2 was released, but it wasn't as good as the first one due to several reasons: Too many things stayed the same, there were no seperations between episodes, the music wasn't very good especially when you compare the amazingly well done soundtrack on DOOM. Then in 1996 Id released Quake, a true 3D game (no psuedo 3D rendering done here!). Quake expanded the multiplayer feature so you could toast somone from all across the globe, instead of playing with the local victims. Quake's graphics blew people away, new enemies were added and iD dropped the whole "puzzle" element from Quake, so it was just PURE carnage there. Then a small team from Midway decided to make "The Absolution", which changed to "DOOM 64" for the nintendo 64. ID granted the license and Midway and Id started builing the game. Remember, Doom was a game from 1993. Quake was the NEW awesome game. The whole goal of DOOM 64 was to make doom feel fresh again, a hard task to do in the year of 1997, 4 years upon the release of the original DOOM. But midway didn't let the skeptics stop them, they made DOOM 64, a fresh and extremely well done game in the DOOM series. Now, lets move on to the review. When I turned on DOOM 64, I could hardly see ANYTHING. I checked the settings and the brightness was on the lowest setting. Strange. Anyways, I turned up the brightness and I saw what DOOM 64 was. The atmosphere in this game is exceptionally well done. From the lighting to the texture choice, it was outstanding. The sound is another thing. Aubrey Hodges has made one of the best game soundtracks ever to be graced to a console. Instead of having hard synth rock, you will hear the creepy and interesting ambiance that fills the air. The soundtrack gets a 10/10. It really sets the mood. The weapon choice is beefed up. Your chainsaw now has 2 blades, you have all the original weapons (every sprite is redone in glorious detail) and the forgotten "Unmaker", a demonic laser that kicks demon ass. The level design is the best from any doom game I've ever seen. And the gameplay is superb. The game's campaign consists of 28 levels, and there are 4 secret levels. There is one thing that bugged me. There is no multiplayer. At all. But this doesn't take away any of the goodness the game has. DOOM 64 is a fantastic, compelling, and beautiful game. But it is also the most difficult of the whole DOOM series. I'm not kidding. It gets so excruciatingly difficult sometimes, but once you complete a level it feels so rewarding.
Anyways, DOOM 64 is my favorite doom game, no questions about it

Anyways, ill finish the review with the stats:

Graphics: 9.5/10 (the atmosphere and redone sprites look so much better than the original)

Gameplay: 10/10 (Its doom. Kill monsters and solve puzzles with an array of kick-ass weapons.)

Sound: 10/10 (Absolutely fantastic ambiance sounds.)

Story: 6/10 (Story is told through the manual, upon completion you get a message saying the DOOM guy will stay in hell to assure the demons wont escape ever again... Something that doesn't stay consistent in DOOM 3! It bugs me!)

Overall: 10

The game is my favorite classic doom game. Its so compelling and rewarding and the whole experience feels fresh and just... fun. If you are looking for a new game to play that has some difficulty (no n00bs allowed!) definitely check out DOOM 64.
