The first cell phone game I ever spent money on, and I assure you it was well worth the money.
Gameplay (8/10): First and foremost it is an FPS RPG where you control yourself through dungeons by going one step at a time, like the days of old. It is simple and thankfully it doesn't require intense real-time button pressing so it is very playable. Every step you make gives the enemy a turn to take a step (or two, or three, depending on their speed) or attack. You have the whole entire Doom weapon arsenal at your disposal and some enemies even have resitance and weakness to certain weapons. The puzzles are decent and thanks to an easy to access map, you likely will not get lost. All in all it is very simple to play but it is deep enough so that you won't likely get bored of it...especially since the game doesn't give you much of a chance to get bored of it. Granted this is a cell phone game and one cannot expect it to be long. The levelling up is well done, based on the EXP you gain from each monster you destroy and you get to upgrade your stats. Like I said, simple like days of old, but as far as cell phones go, this is a pretty solid formula that is pretty darn fun.
Graphics (8/10): Well in all honesty this varies. It can be VERY good looking and VERY ugly. It depends on the phone you are using. It will adapt its look based on your phone's capabilities. The good thing is that many people can play it as a result of this. On a middle-class (for lack of a better term) phone it actually looks pretty good. It looks pretty much like the original Doom, with sometimes slightly more detail and decent effects. Considering I am used to seeing those cheap demo games on cell phones, this looks pretty darn good. Now I have surfed around and seen better too, but this is definatelly on the higher end as far as looks go.
Sound (6/10): Yuck. Once again I am not completely familiar with the capabilities of a cell phone, but I am aware of them being able to play mp3's, which means they can handle pretty good quality sound. Now there is also the fact that there was a memory limit to the size of this game, and id had to sacrifice somewhere in order to be able to fit the game. This was probably it. The only music you hear is the classic Doom theme that jingles in the main menu. The sound effects of the guns sound like the original sounds and the enemies sound like that too. There are some other sound effects but mostly that is it and it gets dull. Now on the bright side this means you can play the game ANYWHERE because you don't need sound in order to fully enjoy the game, which means Doom RPG + Boring Lecture = LOADS OF FUN. The rumble feature is a nice addition too which I put under this category merely because I don't know where else to put it. Now my bad experience with the sound may be bias because I don't know if the sound quality scales like the graphics do compared to your phone. My phone played the game on middle setting pretty much. Just keep in mind the sound is NOT this game strong point, then again is it really that important in a cell phone game?
Value (8/10): Short and sweet, yet longer than one would expect out of a cell phone game. It took me about 3-4 hours to beat it the first time and that isn't bad, considering other cell phone games keep me entertained for about 3-4 minutes. On top of that there are a decent amount of secrets to find and you get a special bonus if you beat the game with all secrets. There is also the prospect of maxing out your level which is actually kind of fun (destroying high level demons with a fireaxe is priceless). The game is so fun that you will also likely find yourself playing through it more than once, I did about 5 times already. Really this is worth the money you pay for it.
Though the game is pretty basic at heart and reuses the same enemies (merely with different colors for higher power), it retains the most important thing a game must have: FUN. It is fun and will entertain most people, except for impatient people. Keep in mind even though it is short by console standards, it is STILL an RPG and if you don't like RPGs this probably would not be worth your time. For most others, if you have a compatible cell phone, consider buying this. Enjoy.
