After Bethesda announced Doom at E3 I was a little less than excited. As a huge fan of "Unreal Tournament" and "Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" I thought the days of fast paced hip-fire shooting was over. I was wrong. Dead freaking wrong. Doom didn't just completely succeed in rebooting a franchise, Doom might've just revived a genre. Doom proved that arena shooters can still be relevant and fun! Within 2 minutes from clicking start, you have a gun in your hand and you're shooting demons in the face. No lengthy intro, no slow build up, and no taking itself to seriously. The bits of story you do get, however, are enough to keep you entertained without getting to deep and convoluted. The goal remains the same throughout the game. Kill invading demons and close the portal to hell. As you progress you'll unlock more weapons, weapon mods, upgrades for your suit as well as your overall stats like health, armor and ammo capacity. Also the difficulty will slightly increase as you progress and the enemy types will become more varied. There's a decent amount of exploration as well. Levels are filled with optional secret areas that require a little parkour skill and a keen eye to find but some have upgrades that can give you an advantage later on. In conclusion Doom has enough going on besides the excellent combat to easily keep you interested/entertained in this 10-13 hour campaign. With all the optional pickups and collectables paired with flawless FPS mechanics, Doom is just some good old fashioned videogame fun wrapped in a wonderful modern package that any fan of the FPS genre can enjoy.
