Ahh, I remember the first time I played Dr. Mario. Spent all night drinking beer and challenging my friends on the old NES. It was so refreshing to play a competitive Tetris like game that wasn't Tetris. Now, it's 14 years later, and much like Excitebike and Castlevania, Nintendo is re-releasing these games as "budget" carts fo the GBA. Personally I think they're a waste of money. Wario Ware already has an only slightly scaled down version of this game available as a easily-found bonus game. Nintendo could obviously figure out how to release this game as a very small bonus feature of Wario Ware, so why do they insist on selling ports of Dr. Mario, Excitebike and Castlevania as separate $20 carts? It's obvioulsy not because combining the carts are somehow beyond the technical limitations of the GBA. What's next, a re-re-release of the original black-and-white Gameboy Tetris for the GBA, packaged as a "Classic Gameboy" game? Gameplay is still fun, and the player link could be fun, assuming you can find another sucker who plunked down $20 for this ancient game. Compared to most other GBA games, the graphics and sound don't even slightly match up. I have games on my mobile phone that are technically more competent than this cart. Dr. Mario can still be a fun, addictive puzzle game, just like Tetris can be - no matter what system you play it on. However this cart is not worth the price and nothing has been done to update it for the GBA hardware. While some may consider this a "faithful port", I consider it a "blatant rip-off".
