It may look like an Ogre at times, but this game will take you to impressive new lands.

Dragon Age Origins comes from Bioware, the developer who seems to get exponentially better with every title they release. It's an RPG set in a medieval fantasy universe. However, this universe is a darker universe ripe with conflict. Elves are subservient to humans, and dwarves live in a distant land, not wanting to be disturbed. Civil war is common, even among the growing threat of the Darkspawn. The player chooses a human, dwarf, or elf; and embarks on an origin mission before coming into the main quest as a Grey Warden uniting the lands against the Darkspawn. I love the idea of a unique quest for each race/class combination, as it adds a new layer of depth to the story not seen in a lot of other fantasy RPG's.

The combat system is very similar to that of KOTOR. If you are a big fan of the Mass Effect style, this system may catch you off guard until you understand how it works. You can queue up attacks and pause the fight to select a certain spell (for mages). Also, you can configure individual tactics for each member of your party if you want to.

Also a staple of Bioware games is morally gray decisions. They make an appearance in Dragon Age, and are done incredibly well. Gone are morality gauges (like the Paragon / Renegade meter from Mass Effect), as the game does not tell you what is right and wrong. It accepts every decision you make and shows the consequences of each one.

This, coupled with the deep and time-consuming relationships developed by the player with the NPC's creates an astounding game world that just sucks you in.

The only real gripes I have with this game come from a technical viewpoint. On the 360, the game simply looks like an Ogre at times. Compressed textures, frequent loading, and the occasional framerate roller coaster contribute to this. However, the voice acting and level of immersion in the world through all of the lore and sweeping songs in the soundtrack make this almost a moot point.

If you like RPG's and have time to spare, this game is an essential addition to your library.
