This game is totally different than the other Budokai games. No move switching, just flying and fighting action.
I feel like this is New Coke, except it's not a total disappointment. They changed the formula completely without a middle step and that leaves me and other long time fans having to adjust to a new way of doing things. Not having the ability to pick different moves was weird at first, but once you realize that each fighter only had two or three moves in the other games anyway, you stop feeling so bad about it.
The controls take some time to get used to and the system needs tweeking. There's three or four ways to really whore up the field and make the fight one sided, suck as meleeing until the enemy is down, then blasting them, repeat. If your not exact in your defensive timing, then you'll be on the ground the whole time and dead in half a minute.
Super attacks are woven into the flow easier, but your enemy can still tell when your getting ready to let that super attack fly and be ready for it
Once you get the whole system down in your head, you can flow from fighter to fighter and handle them all well, while still staying true to your favorites. The Z Evoluation System does provide for uniqueness among the characters and the stat items mean that Krillin can finally fight SS4 Goku in a fair fight.
All in all, this is a great game with a few problems that one would expect froma game that's just changed itself completely. When Tenkaichi 2 comes around ina year or so, I hope Spike hammers out a few of these problems. If they do, they'll have a great product.
As is, this is still a ground breaking fighting game, and alot of fun to boot. For the most fun, play with a big group of friends, passing the controller.
