Tenkaichi is a welcome addition to the DBZ series, but the fighting dynamic and the story mode need improvement.
For those familiar with the story of DBZ, the story mode doesn't do the series justice. The very brief explanation the game gives at the beginning of the sagas leaves out about 80% of the story, especially if you don't know what it consists of.
Also, the World Tournament is relatively easy compared to earlier versions of the game. And once you complete the Advanced Tournament, your reward is to be able to compete in the Cell Games which is easier than the normal tournament because you don't have to worry about ring outs.
Another place they could've improved was character transformations. In all the previous games, with Goku for instance, by the time you're fully decked out, you can go from regular Goku to SS4 Goku in a single round. In this installment, every transformation is a separate character, i.e, Kaio Ken Goku, SSJ Goku, SSJ2 Goku, SSJ3 Goku, etc., and each one of them has special abilities that in previous versions with a breakthrough, you could perform with one character at the same time.
But all in all, the game isn't bad. The developers did succeed with the Toughest Fighter mode which provides a great way to get the new fighting system downed packed and perfect the art of combat. Though the fighting system has a learning curve of about an hour, it's just as good for fans of the earlier installments. For die hard fans of the series and the games, it a definite must have. For gamers just looking to try a new fighting game, it might be better to rent it first.
