User Rating: 4.8 | Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi PS2
Now, class - pay attention. When you have something that is almost perfect, you don't perfect it by destroying what made it decent to begin with. Tenkaichi is garbage. There - I said it. Budokai 3 was a very good fighter that should rightfully have been perfected by a fourth installment. Instead, the loyal Dragonball fans (like myself) get treated to a half-assed, quantity-over-quality turd that should be imbedded in the head of every knucklehead that actually ENJOYS this travesty of a game. For starters, the control system has been simplified to the point of being stupid. All your melee attacks now are controlled by only one button, and now the directional stick controls the type of combo - which can lead to some frustrating moments. I'll give the designers some credit, though - they did attempt to make the game deeper: the tracking-ki system, the counter-attacking moves, unlimited flight - but it's all killed by the sluggish way all these things are brought together. You can never seem to do exactly what you want to do without getting your brains beat in by a multi-hit charge move! There's a large amount of fighters in this one, but there are some key charaters that were omitted (like Dabura, Pikon, Pui-Pui, Android 13) , and having all these characters mean nothing when you spend most of your time fighting charaters from a distance! You'll feel like you're trying to kick someone's ass from across the street! And NO TRANSFORMATIONS???? Who play tested this junk? Transformations are the best thing about Dragonball! *sigh*. The graphics are good - but stay away from this one.
