60 characters, 100's of transformation states... Great addition to the DBZ gaming genre

User Rating: 9.1 | Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi PS2
Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi Budokai, the latest in the Dragon Ball Z Budokai series but unlike the original Budokai's - Tenkaichi features free flying and split screen multiplayer. As well as a mass of characters and transformations.

The first thing that struck me about this game was the controls, they differ drastically from Budokai 1, 2 and 3's button layout but suprisingly the layout still works great and is easy to use, although it does take a while to get used to.
Another big difference here is the special moves, to perform a special move in this game you must press L2, Circle for most "Favourite Techniques" and L2, Circle and Up/Down/Left/Right for most "Finishing Moves". Most special moves are extremely easy to execute. Also included is the infamous "Burst Mode" where each character must frantically rotate the analog stick to stand a chance at breaking out of the burst unscathed. Also the "Dragon Dash" techniques are sort of imitated in this game but are easier to execute and do much less damage than in previous games.

Dodging and "Instant Translocation" (Teleporting) is made even easier in this game because of the Free Flying environments, though an "Lock-On" feature is also added it is different for each character, some characters cannot detect a players "Ki" on the radar, others are almost completely blind to characters on their radar.

The Environments in Budokai Tenkaichi are somewhat amazing, and fore the most part very destructable, you can destroy and crush mountains, trees, parts of landscape etc.
And for the first time ever you can even fight under water!

Now for the gameplay modes, this game features a Story Mode, World Tournament Mode, Duel Mode (2player), Training, Options and a Profile Gallery for all the characters within the game.
The storymode is rather bland with no actual story detail. which for none DBZ fans would make most of the story very confusing.. but it still features great fights and almost every saga and movie from the Dragon Ball Z universe. The other modes are self explanitory, World Tournament is basically the same as the Budokai world tournaments except because of the free fly they are made much easier (in my opinion anyway).

Well thats it for my review, if your a DBZ fan i reccomend this game to you, if not maybe you should rent it first..
