User Rating: 10 | Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku II GBA
There was almost no way that the next true installment of the "Dragonball Z" video game series was going to do anything wrong. Even though Atari had to do many more things right with the sequel then they did with the original game, Atari was going to prove that it could STILL make good video games like anybody else could! And not only did they do that, they did it very well! The plot line of "DBZ: The Legacy of Goku II" sticks much closer to the original TV show plotline than its predecessor did, and it even throws in a few extra things that make the story even better, mainly the inclusion of Cooler from "Dragonball Z V: Cooler's Revenge!" This time around, players got to play five/six different characters instead of just Goku! Even though the name is kind of a misnomer since Goku isn't playable until closer to the end of the game, this game manages to be perfect all the same! For instance, the game's music is closer in tune to the TV show than the original game was, and the writing is faithful to the TV show as well. The game also addresses concerns about things that the first game overlooked. For instance, logic was introduced as to why forest creatures behaved violently in this video game, and it was due to Garlic Junior's Black Water Mist effects. And even though characters can now only fly in certain places, the flying mechanic now allows characters to fly to anywhere in the world that they need to go to, making this game much more free-roaming than its predecessor was. The moves are also individualized for each character, and the villains are challenging to fight in an engaged combat. The plot of "DBZ: The Legacy of Goku II" picks up right where its predecessor left off. Gohan becomes aware that Freeza managed to survive Goku's attack, and he's coming to planet Earth with a vengenance! And Freeza is bringing his father, King Cold as well. Fortunately, hope comes from an unexpected source: another Saiyan! And this mysterious youth slices through Freeza with one blow, and blows up King Cold as well! Then when Goku arrives, the youthful Super Saiyan introduces himself to his idol. The young Saiyan's name is Trunks, and he comes from a dark future. A timeline where two powerful Androids have a reign of terror over the populace of Earth. Androids 17 and 18, have no moral conscience and were designed to be killing machines, by Goku's old enemy, Dr. Gero. 17 & 18 are ruthless as the first thing they did was to kill their creator. Then they went after the heroes of Earth. Chiatozu, Yamcha, Tien, Krillin, Piccolo, even a Super Saiyan Vegeta couldn't defeat the Androids and the heroes were killed. Goku never even got to fight because a heart virus took him out. 14 years after these events, all that's left is a teenaged Gohan, and a young warrior named Trunks, Bulma and Vegeta's son. Gohan is now a Super Saiyan, but even he's having difficulty with the Androids. And Trunks isn't skilled enough to help Gohan out yet. One day, Gohan decides that the time has come to do or die, and faces off against the Androids for one last time. Unfortunately for Gohan, he dies. But in his death, he gives Trunks the rage he needs to transform into a Super Saiyan. Then when Trunks is 21 years old and stronger and more skilled than Gohan was at his peak, he goes off to face the Androids himself. Unfortunately, Trunks STILL can't beat the Androids and is nearly killed! Trunks knew that he was in a broken timeline, and the world shouldn't be like this. Trunks couldn't make his future into a truly better place, but he knew that he could give another timeline a fighting chance. So a Time Machine was built, which allowed Trunks to travel into an alternate timeline and save a different timeline from suffering the same fate that the Future Trunks' timeline suffered. Trunks gives Goku the heart virus medicine that's available only in the future. He also warns Goku that three years to this day, the Androids will appear and will start to attack the innocent civilians of Earth. Goku says not to worry, he and his fellow warriors will train vigorously to prepare for their arrival, and be able to make their future a better place to live in. Future Trunks, filled with renewed hope, heads back into his own timeline, determined to keep up the fight. So Goku and the others train, and in three years time, the Z Warriors are ready to fight. True to Trunks' word, the Androids appear and the Z Warriors can't sense their energy because they're mechanical! Unfortunately, Trunks' interference with the past caused unforeseen ripple effects into the Z Warriors timeline. Goku ended up getting his virus right in the middle of his fight with Android 19! Fortunately, Vegeta finally gets his Super Saiyan powers and destroys Android 19! But one other thing Trunks didn't anticipate is that Dr. Gero himself turned into an Android, the poweful Android 20! And Trunks comes back into the past to tell the others that he destroyed the Androids in his own time, but he discovers how things have gotten off ever since Trunks appeared. Trunks wants to rectify his error and clearify which threats the Z Warriors need to confront. Androids 17 and 18, a cyborg brother and sister team of killing machines. Appealing in design, but deadly in power, because their power is seemingly limitless! Trunks was barely able to destroy them, so he knows how much of a threat they can be! Unfortunately, Dr. Gero manages to activate them. And just like in Trunks' timeline, Androids 17 and 18 turn and kill their creator. And as it turns out, there is another Android to worry about, the silent but strong Android 16. But while Androids 17 and 18 manage to beat the Z Warriors, they don't kill them! Their primary goal is to find and fight Goku. Since he's still alive in this timeline, the Androids want to fight the most powerful being on Earth. But Goku might not be as invincible as the Androids or even the other Z Warriors think he is. Because an unwelcome discovery is about to be made, a discovery about a hidden threat unknown to Trunks or the other Z Warriors, and its about to make its identity known to the entire world at large! Will the Z Warriors be able to stop the Androids and this mysterious threat? Play this video game to find out! I did, and I thoruoghly enjoyed it! That's my review for this game! Enough said! ;)
