Fun traditional RPG

DQIX starts of with you creating your character. There aren't too many customisation options but it works. To be honest, the story put me off at the beginning. Your a "guardian" of a little villaige, a sort of angel. You look over this village, make sure everything is running smoothly. One day the tree you worship goes beserk and your sent down and lose your guardian powers. You basically become a regular guy, known as "mortals". As the game progresses you have to travel to various towns and help them with their problems. It just so happens that every town has their own issue which you and your party must help to solve. One town has a deadly illness, another is threatened by a knight, the other is ruled by a snobby queen, and so on. By helping these people you will hopefully be able to return to your world as a guardian. This gets a bit repetitive, as you know what happens... Go to a town, talk to people about their problem, go on a quest to help them in a dungeon, beat a boss, problem solved. So the story isn't anything to get excited about.

The battle system is your standard RPG formula, nothing fancy. Attack, Defend, Magic or Ability. However one thing I liked is that enemies are displayed on the map. Not only does this make the game more accessible to those not used to RPG's, but it makes it less annoying and easier to defeat the enemies you want (e.g for quests). There is a fair bit of grinding involved, but not too much which is good. There are many different classes to choose from and your characters can change classes. You also make your own party members, they don't do anything except follow you and fight with you. The battle system works well, it might not be revolutionary but is fun. The enemies are also very creative, my favourite is the cruelcumber. One annoying aspect is that when you switch class, the characters goes to level 1 so you have to level them up again, spending some hours grinding.

This game's main story lasts about 25 hours. But there are countless side quests to do which means you could be playing for up to 60. I haven't tried the multiplayer yet.

DQIX is a very enjoyable game, and is accessible to newcomers to the series. There are countless quests to go on which make it a very a long game, and well worth the money.
