You'll laugh, you'll cry (well, maybe not so much), you'll find yourself addicted to this amazing game.

Personally, I haven't played too many RPGs in my time but I have played some of the best and this one is no exception. I'm also a newcomer to the Dragon Quest series and I really didn't know what to expect from this game. But when I sat down and turned this baby on, I was immediately taken back by this wonderful experience.

First of all, don't take the innocent looking cover fool you, this game is moderate on adult themes. You'll see bars with their traditional bar fights and you'll find yourself hearing the mention of booze more often then what you'd come to expect. There are also some violent scenes that'll have you children rather put off as well as some...suggestive themes. But I'm not exactly here to convince little kids to play this game.

All situations aside, the plot is great. It's not the complicated plot you'll see in the Final Fantasy games, but it's not as simple as Tetris either. You'll take the role of a young, mute and unnamed man, who is the sole survival of a botanically tragic event. A jester (what happened to a regular old evil wizard?) named Dhoulmagus has taken control of a powerful scepter, which unleashed a curse upon the castle he stole it from. The king and the princess have been turned into a monster and horse respectively, and vines have overidden the castle and all the servants have been frozen in time. So, you set out with the king and a bandit named Yangus to travel across the world to pursue Dhoulmagus and lift the curse. Along the way, you'll meet several new party members, an aristocrat named Jessica and a gambling templar named Angelo, both of whom want to avenge the murder of someone dear to them by Dhoulmagus. As you travel, you'll meet other colorful characters and witness some very humorous dialogue.

The story isn't everything of course. You'll find yourself in a fast and challenging struggle against evil that'll have you sweating each time you travel across the many countries landscapes. The battles are fierce with enemies that possess impressive abilities which, if you're not careful, will kill you. You'd best be prepared everytime you travel. The bosses are also fiercely tough that require you to plan carefully about the actions you take. Despite the toughness of these battles, you'll be happy that the difficulty wasn't toned down in development because you won't be finding yourself bored anytime soon.

The battle systems are great and fast. You'll have the options of using regular attacks, abilities, spells, items and such. At first, your tactical options will be few to none but as you level up, there'll be a plethora of options soon enough. Be careful though, the chance to recover your MP and HP can only be found at towns so you should keep MP consumption to a minimum.

The towns you visit aren't exactly brimming with activity but they usually have the stand-bys. An item shop, weapons, and armor but they are sometimes combined. There's also an inn where you can rest for a small fee and recover your health and MP. Lastly, you'll find yourself visiting churches, arguably the most important places of the game. There, you can save, resurrect your fallen foes, see how much exp points you need to level up and a way to cure status ailments.

The graphics are also worht mentioning. I'm sure most of you have heard of Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball. His beautiful designs are as great as ever, brought to 3-D life by cel-animation. Some of the character designs will seem incredibly similar and somewhat unoriginal but with the amazing detail put in, you really won't give a dman.

There are a lot of other elements to the game but telling you everything will just spoil the surprises. There is nearly nothing wrong with the game except for the fact that you'll rarely find a chance to recover fully. The difficulty might be daunting but you'll manage with a little training. Overall, a must buy.
