A CLASSIC REBORN!
This game is excellent in all aspects.
Game play is very simple and does not take long to learn. This is because it has classic RPG game play meaning you encounter monsters randomly, select who attacks who, defeat monsters, gain experience, level up, use points to raise combat levels, learn new skill, and steps repeat. You can also equip weapons, armor, shields, helmets, and one accessory to each of your characters. However, not all weapons can be equipped to all characters, different characters specialize with different weapons. Another classic RPG attribute of this game is as you progress through the game the items you equip to yourself become stronger. Fortunately, you can use the unique “Alchemy Pot” ability, which allows you to look at alchemy recipes to create weapons and other items. Although, the only way you can create powerful weapons and items fast is guessing because powerful recipes are also only found depending on the progress in the game. This classic RPG style on the PS2 is a match made in heaven and extremely addictive giving Gameplay : 10.
As I described the game earlier, Dragon Quest: VIII uses the classic cel-shaded graphics, which were also used for the similar artistry in Dragonball z: Budokai 3. The graphics worked perfectly in creating the characters and environments, however, cel-shaded graphics is just a recycled PS2 trick, and everyone is ready for new graphic elements. Overall the games graphics worked perfectly for the anime oriented style giving Graphics : 9.
Dragon Quest VIII has some of the best vocal and instrumental aspects I have ever heard in a video game. Quoted by UT_Wrestler “It sounds as though they recorded the soundtrack with the help of a big symphony”. Also the cast of voices is very unique through out the game, so you do not hear recycled voices too often. Overall I give Audio : 10.
For value… Lets just say in one run through the game I have played approximately 160 hours and still have not defeated some of the bonus bosses, and dungeons. This game is worth owning, and paying full. I give Value : 9.
Overall, you cannot complain about this game. Everyone can appreciate an up to date revival of a classic and especially a game giving you over 150 hours of play. Though it is not at the level of its counterparts Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest is a game that deserves a lot of attention and game play.
