A solid dungeon crawler that will satisfy but won't impress

User Rating: 7.5 | Drakan: The Ancients' Gates PS2
Drakan is a game from a genre that has all but given up the goat. The days of sprawling Tomb Raider style dungeon crawlers is passed, replaced now with an influx of first person shooters and extravagant RPG's. But this is a title worth owning.

Story 4/10

Drakan does not have a complicated or immersing story line. You play as Ryn, a young woman who's town was in typical fantasy form burned to the ground by a race of orc like creatures. But Ryn has something over her stereotypical foes, a dragon. Ryn has formed a bond with a dragon named Arokh a goofy talking one dimensional character that serves as Ryn's chariot and tank. You meet up with a queen of some sort in the neighboring town and are charged with opening some gates and stopping some people from taking over the world, blah blah blah. The story is not this games strong suite.

Sound - 6/10

The music in Draken is nice. Nothing to write home about, repeats itself a lot, but it's ok. That's really all that can be said about it.

Characters - 8/10

Ryn and Arohk are really not that special. Ryn pops off with some clever one liners every once and awhile but that's about it. What really makes this game is the NPC's. Go up to the drunk guy in the bar. Just talk to him for about five minutes. Also talk to the guy playing the lute. The NPC's all have unique personalities and most of the are hilarious.

Fighting - 7/10

Ryn has an assortment of weapons to choose from. Daggers, swords and bows are all available, as is magic. I found magic to be completely useless in this game. It rarely connected and when it did, it wasn't powerful enough to be worth using. Arokh is ok, although sometimes he's as useful as a tuxedo on a goldfish.

Drakan is a fun game, mostly because you can find it for under $10 (if it's more you're paying to much). It's about a 12 hour trip and it's great to play with friends and laugh at. But don't take it too seriously.
