Driveclub Review (PS4) (with all the updates installed)
THE GOOD
+ The graphics are stunning! Driveclub is seriously one of the best looking games I've ever played. The dynamic weather, the scenery and especially the cars look incredibly realistic. I definitely went "wow" several times.
+ Exhilarating sense of speed. After you're done with the slow hot hatches, you actually get to drive fast supercars like Ferraris and that's when the game shines. The sense of speed is great.
+ The variety in race types and the constant little challenges. You get to do point-to-point races, time attacks and drifting. I also like the constant little challenges during races, like beating a certain average speed, driving a corner as neatly as possible or just drifting the heck out of that Maserati!
+ Punishes cheating. So don't cut those corners or crash deliberately!
+ Creating your own paint jobs. It's nowhere near Forza's level of customization, but it's still a fun mode.
+ Engine sounds. All cars sound great. Especially that Renault Alpine racer sounds like the angriest bee alive!
THE BAD
- Lacks charm and personality. Sadly, it's all too by-the-numbers and just badly lacks personality. Gran Turismo has its own hook with the insane car collecting, slow career progress and classy menu tunes, and Forza has its own thing, too. Driveclub is, well, just driving to get stars.
- Lack of variety in cars. Loads of European cars and... that's it. Where are the Japanese cars and the American cars?
- Crashes are always the player's fault. Even if a rival car just blasts head-on right into your rear bumper, you lose the points. Really?
THE VERDICT
Driveclub is absolutely gorgeous, but it lacks personality and charm. There's just no big reason to buy Driveclub when far superior racing games exist.
