Driver Goes Arcade

User Rating: 7.5 | Driver: Renegade 3DS
Driver Renegade goes back to it's roots bringing modern arcade racers and burnout influences with it. The game is broken into two parts Story and Career. Story takes place between 1&2 as you play as Tanner. Out from the police force his intolerance of crime leads him to work for a senator who agrees to help take down the crime lords. The story only plays as mission set ups and is very predictable, but Tanner and his psycho antics and bad on linners make it interesting for fans who like over the top 90's/80's movies. Missions either have you racing to a location, tailing a car to a location, demolition derby type (destroy all cars or buildings ), and escaping to a location. Driving is very solid as steering, turning, skids, and attacks are very easy to pull off. You'll be driving like a pro in no time thanks to an easy learning curve. AI can be bad at times, demolition they will just drive on a track it seems or crash into everything at times, on other missions they are aggressive and will waste no time destroy you. Good thing your car acts like a tank as it can take a lot of punishment and destroys things with ease. Story is over very quick (only 20 missions) but career mode is were it's at. You can unlock more cars along with the story mode and upgrade them. It follows more of a racer giving you the open city of new york to race in and with good AI in. various modes. The 3D is great while not adding a since of speed it makes things pop out and adds a since of depth , Explosions have debris flying at you and smoke convincingly clouds the screen. over all it's a solid racer, story seems like an afterthought and is a bit one note but career has a a lot of arcade racing fun to be had. it's fun in the right doses but at a $40 price tag i say wait a few months for it to hit the bargen bin.
