Finally, a real game for the iPhone

Since the app store started churning out games in earnest a few months ago I've been searching for a download to convince me that the iPhone can stand on its own as a portable gaming device. Dungeon Hunter is that game. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed other games that I've downloaded, but they've all either been hampered by controls that just weren't as good as they would have been with a real joystick and buttons, or they've been cutesy games that are fun but that I wouldn't consider playing unless I was stuck on the subway or in an airplane.

Dungeon Hunter, on the other hand, delivers a satisfying gaming experience and never once had me wishing that I was instead playing the game on a dedicated gaming device. The controls are smartly implemented, with a virtual joystick that's the most workable I've seen yet. The visuals are surprisingly good, with an attention to detail that I wouldn't have expected but really does add to the immersiveness of the game. And the general design of the game, from game mechanics to storyline, sticks about as closely to a medieval RPG as possible but are nonetheless effective and well implemented. I highly recommend this game for anyone who feels like they've been compromising the type of game they play for the convenience of playing on the iPhone.
