A game that could have been good, but ended up somewhere between bearable and utterly tedious.

User Rating: 4.5 | Dungeon Siege PC
Where did the times when you could sit down to play a game only to realize you've just spent ten hours without even noticing, go to. Nowadays I can barely sit down for an hour before I start tearing my hair out like an extremely angry mad scientist. Recently I played Dungeon Siege and believe me, Inserting the CD into a microwave for 30 seconds is a lot more fun and intuitive than playing this piece of dog ****

Firstly, the story which is truly pathetic. You are a generic farmer boy who gets to see his whole family slaughtered before his own eyes by a bunch of savage raiders. He then embarks on a quest to uh.... kill everything he sees on his way to find out something. The game gives absolutely no motivation for the main character to embark on his quest or indeed any direction besides " follow the endless corridors which supposedly have something at the end of them". Great storytelling.

Secondly, the combat is repetitive to the point of madness. There are almost no special skills to use if you are a melee character. Being a spell caster proves to be bloody useless about halfway through the game since skills level up by using it. So while a melee character hits a mob three times, you will cast one spell. So by the time you reach halfway through the game, you will slack behind everyone on damage and hit rating. And you need to be in top shape if you want to stand any chance against the harder mobs in the game. Also, while traveling you will encounter some NPCs that will offer to lend a hand by joining your party. Their skills are usually a lot lower than yours, so taking them into the party is never a good idea. There is quite a large variety of spells in the game but whats the point if a mage can only use one. Using different spells means they will all become obsolete later on. What a load of dung.

It doesn't help the fact that the game is one giant linear corridor that connects one endlessly long dungeon to the other, with the occasional city in between to unload your loaded characters. Fortunately, you can use a pack mule that can carry a load of items. But here comes the most annoying part of this game, the reason why I quit playing this game after doing about three quarters of it. I was literally at the point of near madness. The reason is that while all 8 of your characters can carry a total of a hundred or more items, when they die, the items fall out of their inventory and spread all over the battlefield like a pinata loaded with dynamite just exploded. And since your characters will be dying constantly, especially towards the end of the game, it turn into a massive cluster **** and tedious to the point of insanity. Can you imagine collecting hundreds upon hundreds of items every time your party almost dies? one by one? ..... I don't know who thought this was a good design choice, but he really deserves to go to a special hell where he should pack shopping for old women. You will be constantly hindered by inventory management issues and the lack of a Town Portal spell turns it into a real pain.

Lastly, the level design is bland and the soundtrack is uninspired. Whats the point of making different kinds of monsters if the rest is so very generic and yawn inducing. I can only recommend this game to very, very patient people, but why bother tolerating it when you got much better games out there. I say drop this uninspired and shallow turd and go play Diablo or something, anything but this.
