Fantasy Turn-Based Strategy games have long been a favorite genre of mine (ever since the days of Shining Force 1 & 2 on Sega Genesis). Naturally, for those of us who enjoy these types of games, the announcement of this game was pretty big news. Not only was the PSP (and to some degree, still is) in desperate need of some decent RPGs and strategy games, but any RPG with a D&D heading should cause some excitement for those of us that love the genre. D&D have been getting role-playing right for years now, but this game walks the line of being an exception to that rule. While the game does have some nice graphics, creative maps, and fun spells/powers to work with, the strategy element proves to be mysteriously lacking as gameplay continues into the later stages of the game. The battles become a bit monotonous as your strategy does not change much throughout the game. Some of the character specific skills appear to be thrown in the game without much use (for example, the find secret doors ability seems to have little usage, as I have discovered just one secret door throughout the game, of which nothing too exciting was hiding within), and the game becomes more of a turn based hack & slash with a few spells thrown in the mix. The storyline is a bit dry, and you should not be surprised when you find yourself skipping the less than exciting cut scenes between battles. Not a complete waste of money, but don't set something else aside for this one either.
