DandD fans who are also turn-based fans will like it, but others may wonder what the fuss is about

User Rating: 6 | Dungeons & Dragons Tactics PSP
The gamespot reviews does a good job explaining the pros and cons of this game. However I think fans of turn-based DandD games will score this game somewhat higher. A 5 score seems low to me.

Some thoughts:

1. For a game on a portable game machine, far too many of the levels are dark. You can bring along torches and light spells but that's not the problem. The gamma level is too low on the graphics across the board. Take your PSP into even moderate daylight and you wont see anything on the screen when playing this game. The game designers goofed: by all means make levels in caves but dont make the cave graphics so dark you cannot see anything!

2. A lot of liberties are taken with the DandD ruleset in order to make a computer game. That's OK and understandable but there are some oddities. You'll simply have to play the game to figure out how the game differs from the established ruleset because the manual and builtin help menus dont offer sufficient explanations. Good luck figuring out what some spells actually do in this game, even if you know DandD.

3. You can save at any time which is great and removes a lot of irritation about the game. You can save and load at any time without penalty and that ultimately makes the game insanely easy.

4. The menu system during combat is brilliantly done and works perfectly. But the menu system outside of combat is extremely klunky. You will spend extra minutes fiddling thru several menus just to get basic information and then equip something.

5. The big surprise is that the game's difficulty becomes widly unbalanced after you characters get to around level 6. Then your cleric will have buff spells to enhance your party that last for 10 or more rounds, and your wizards will have huge damaging fireball spells that cover literally half the map! At that point the game is a cakewalk. Just send your wizard into a room and incernerate the enemies. I have to wonder if the folks making the game did that on purpose because it really makes no sense. The game was fun for me but then again I really like turn-based games.
