Geez, what a disappointment.
I was looking forward to this game, as every version has been an improvement on the previous ones in one or more ways.
Graphically, it's nothing spectatcular, and I guess that's not a surprise as Koei has given up on the PS 2. The camera angles are horrible, which is unusual because the previous games had excellent cameras. It seems I am forever trying to find the guy I'm dueling, and he is always disappearing just off the corner of the camera.
Speaking of disappearing (anyone who's played this game knows what I am about to say next) they should have used more "fog of war" in the PS 2 version of DW 6. Virtually every character except yours appears and disappears with magical regularity. I'm assuming this is because the PS 2 is unable to handle the demands DW 6 is placing on it. Still, when you can't even complete the mission, find enemy officers etc. because they are disappearing...c'mon. Work with me here.
The story is butchered, which is a shame because DW is based on one of the greatest novels EVER written, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It's the little details that mean a lot to a great story like this. A lot of omissions and just downright mistakes were made to the storyline in DW 6, and it really, REALLY burns me. The oath in the peach garden was done in a PEACH GARDEN, not on a battle field, Cao Cao was DEAD by the time Wu Zhang Plains was fought, Sun Ce NEVER attacked Xu Chang, Liu Bei's vengence was NEVER looked at as "virtuous" (even Zhuge Liang or Zhao Yun) etc. etc. etc. Very disappointing. One thing that makes DW fun is the interesting relationships between the characters, the plot twists etc.
Take for instance when Xiahou Dun is shot in the eye at Xia Pi Castle. Great story, but totally left out in DW 6. Dumb. In fact, the story in DW 6 doesn't seem to have the epicness of DW 4 or the personal tragedy of DW 5. Something's missing, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
However, one BAD mistake I can put my finger on is changing many of the character's weapons. Some characters, like Zhou Yu, weren't really defined by their weapons anyway.
But changing Lu Bu's Lunar Spear to this oversized throwing star was just dumb, pure and simple. Even in the NOVEL, it said Lu Bu used a halberd (when he assasinated Dong Zhuo). Xiahou Dun, Gan Ning, Zhang liao, Ma Chao...I could go on and on but I think you get my point.
Anyway, I hope by the time DW 7 comes out, Koei seriously looks at the mistakes made in #6. Put the story back in, put the characters back in, put the fun back in.
