Brings back memories

User Rating: 8.3 | Earthworm Jim SNES
It's been seven years since I've played the game, yet I still remember the "What the Heck" level because I had so much trouble with it all those years ago. This game, although not a masterpiece, is truly unforgettable.

Graphics: 8

The graphics are fine for the game, although not intrinsically detailed, are clear and precise. Most levels are on the dark side, which sets a certain aura for the game. The character models are fine, as they're not smudgy. The backgrounds aren't all that important but it'd be nice if they could change a little to add variety.

Gameplay: 9

The gameplay is simply amazing, and easily the game's strong point. From the obstacles (trust me there are a lot) to the action, this game has it all. The bosses are actually difficult as they require actual strategy, unlike some other action games out there. You'll have to learn to utilize your weapons well, and conserve ammo as it will run out in some cases. The levels are amazing, especially "what the heck" and "andy asteroids" as they are my favorites. One thing for sure is that once you get past the controls, you won't be disappointed by the gameplay.

Control: 6

The controls are overall smooth and not too much of a pain. The aiming isn't too bad, but could get aggravating especially when you have to aim fast but the game doesn't exactly allow you to. Earthworm Jim could sometimes be slightly awkward in his movements, which could get annoying, but most of the time his controls are good. Sometimes the whip could be a hassle when trying to latch onto hooks, but once you get the hang of it you shouldn't mess up too much.

Sound: 8

Some of the pieces in Earthworm Jim are surprisingly catchy and suit the mood well. The sounds that come from enemies and even Earthworm Jim himself are crazy, which fits the game's crazy mood perfectly. The sound has no problems whatsoever, but it could be improved.

Overall: 8.3

This game is amazing, but listed below are some of the key points to keep in mind:

Pros:
- Great graphics
- Amazing action
- Good level designs
- Catchy beats
- Good obstacles

Cons:
- Aggravating controls
- Could use a little more variety

Earthworm Jim is definitely a must buy, and an easy purchase as it most likely only costs about 5 bucks off Ebay. I highly recommend buying this game as it'll give you hours of enjoyment and frustration (a good thing).
