Ecco is a weird game. If playing as a dolphin wasn't weird enough, the crazy plot which involves aliens makes it even crazier. It could probably be catergorized as a platformer, but Ecco is far too unique to be labeled as such. You have to navigate through the sea, complex coves and caverns. But, being a dolphin, you have to resurface for air every so often. There's many secrets and puzzles to discover. The graphics are vibrant and full of smooth animations. The audio is very ambient. The game can be frustrating at times, but for the most part it's difficulty is fair. The game is of good length, and there's a good sense of wonder and discovery throughout. Overall, for $8 you'd be hard-pressed not to get a fine title like Ristar, Castlevania, or Gunstar. But this makes a good runner-up. It's a great game that should be considered, and I can guarantee there's nothing else out there quite like it.
