Electronic Super Joy Review

User Rating: 7 | Electronic Super Joy PC

Electronic Super Joy is quirky, goofy and funny. Its pulsating music and vibrant art design will draw you in right from the start, and while the game can be really fun at times, some awkward level design quirks and flaws prevent it from being truly remarkable. However, it’s still a mostly enjoyable platformer with a unique sense of humor and style.

The first thing that will immediately stand out with Electronic Super Joy is the music. Its original soundtrack takes the best of dubstep and electronica and completely surrounds you by it. The tracklist is modest, but each song is enjoyable and makes the levels they’re in more enjoyable as you progress through each one.

Adding to Electronic Super Joy’s unique sense of style is its vibrant and colorful level design. Each level assaults you with bright pinks, reds and blues as you traverse them. The colors pulsate and each level has unique visual effects that help them stand out from each other. The game is at its best when it packs a lot of colorful shapes and geometry on the screen. At times, however, the levels can be barren with little else than a few platforms and your character shown on screen.

Electronic Super Joy can be a fun game to play. It’s a challenging action platformer that will test your reflexes and your patience. Death comes quickly, but the game throws you right back into the fold without any wait. This makes each mistake temporary, as you’ll want to avenge your previous death mere seconds afterwards. However, at times, the game’s level design can make it unnecessarily difficult. Sometimes, you’ll gain a new ability only to have it taken away moments later. Platforms too low to the ground will get in your way and lead to a hasty death more often than your own miscalculations. Boss fights, while humorous and entertaining, can be an exercise in tedium and frustration, as most of them take place in stationary areas with an insane amount of enemies and obstacles on screen. There are some odd quirks that add to the frustration as well; the camera can move rapidly for a brief moment during a level only to slow to a crawl mere moments later.

Having said all of this, I still had fun while I played Electronic Super Joy. The game sucks you in at moments in large part to the great music and the colorful visuals. The gameplay is addictive at times, and it’s immensely satisfying as you slowly progress through a challenging level and ultimately completing it. It’s frustrating only when the game’s own level design and odd quirks get in the way more than your own skill level. There are a few great gameplay ideas scattered around, and you’ll appreciate its random, odd sense of humor as you progress from level to level. While there are certainly more polished platformers that you could play, Electronic Super Joy stands out and is worth a try for those looking for a light and goofy experience.
