At that time it was unbelievable that the PC could contain such a huge amount of data. Also the docking to the space stations was almost impossible to do. You had to correct for acceleration, inertia and rotating on 3 axises almost like in real space docking procedures. It was very hard to do. But if you got the hang of it was very rewarding, just because it needed a lot of effort to master. So you where a real Elite if you could!
Today the games are more programmed for easy control. Unfortunately not for advanced realistic space maneuvering. Despite the fact that a lot of space knowledge is freely available now. Also about the mathematics of real space flight is much more known today. Why not use this knowledge for an up to date new Elite-first-encounter-frontier-space-adventure-exploration game? In the spirit of David Braben?
