Put nothing in and get nothing out, Quake Wars booms into your 360 with one of the steepest learning curves.
At its core, Quake Wars is a team-based ("There is no I in team but a U in Suck- if you think you're a one-man team") skirmish match. One side is preset per level to either defend 3-5 objectives and the other is on offense.
What makes ET:QW unique? Classes! There are five in total and all contribute to a single team, where if everyone knows their roles, it's synchronized slaughter. Let me just brief you on the classes:
GDF SOLDIER/ STROGG AGGESSOR
Powerhouses of damage and destruction, they carry rocket launchers and super-high rate of fire for mowing down the weaker masses. They also accomplish "Destroy" objectives.
GDF ENGINEER/ STROGG CONSTRUCTOR
Both support and objective pioneers, Engineers and Constructors accomplish "Construct" objectives but also deploy handy turrets that either attack humans, vehicles, or incoming artillery fire. They also lay defensive perimeter mines and are able to fix anything that's broke.
GDF MEDIC/ STROGG TECHNICIAN
Entirely support classes, these two are the lifeblood of any team. Capable of reviving fallen allies, no team should form an offensive without having a medic, and likewise, no team should expect to resist the offensive without medics.
GDF COVERT OPS (Operative)/ STROGG INFILTRATOR
These are the snipers. They both contain one extremely unique advantage over everyone else: Identity theft. See somebody of the opposite team laying dead on the ground? Steal his uniform and wa-la, you're the other team. Allows for some nifty backstabs to unsuspecting victims. Also places Radars and accomplishes "Hack" objectives.
GDF FIELD OPS (Operative)/ STROGG OPPRESSOR
Also entirely support classes, Field Operatives can call down massive artillery strikes on enemy positions in three forms: An erratic missile downpour, a precise missile downpour, or what's akin to a miniature nucler bomb. They may also throw airstrikes and (GDF) resupply ammo to allies or (STROGG) deploy defensive shields.
Now that you know of classes, how about an actual review of the game?
The shooting is fast, twitchy, and frantic. Life or death is decided in second-long shootouts, so you'd better be on your game. Weapons are all appropriately balanced and have parallels on enemy sides. The vehicles are all very equally balanced, except Strogg have more offensive vehicles, while the GDF have more transport vehicles.
The core gameplay itself is genius; from the utilization of a Strogg Infiltrator's teleporter to reach unaccessable sniper points to a multi-point invasion, there are limitless strategies. All indoor objectives have plenty of entrances and the outdoor objectives aren't too hard to assault, either. The level design, above all, eclipses everything you've seen before. They're simply breathtakingly large. Even Refinery, the smallest map, spans miles of terrain.
The graphics aren't very impressive, however, and I'll leave it at that.
Online play supports 16 players, although those matches are very laggy. However, hosts can define the amount of players in a game and even include bots! What's impressive is, is that the bots are incredibly smart. The world leader of 360 Quake Wars has lost battles against bots (Very, very few however). I've talked to him personally!
A big boost in online play is awards. These come in the form of easy, simplistic starters, but the final set of awards takes serious long-term dedication.
While doing things pertinent to your class, you gain level-up experience. In turn, if you gain enough experience, you can level up three times, granting access to newer weapons, more health and armor, and different perks.
The campaign is nothing special, but don't discount it. It lets you learn the game and if you don't learn the campaign, well, you'll be clueless online.
Well, that's it, people. Great game. Go buy it. ;)
