Racism finds a new home on the web.

User Rating: 1 | eRepublik WEB
eRepublik touts itself as a web based social networking and strategy game, where users toil to build up their character to participate in financial, political and military interactions with their fellow players.

'Levelling up' is achieved primarily through answering quiz questions and little else, which are often sourced based on the user's country. This is where the localization problems begin with the game - due to the military aspect of the game it is quite common that your country could be conquered by another, leaving your game in an awkward position behind a language barrier, and slowing down your characters development.

There are the normal aspects of a real-life simulation game; buy food to eat, buy a home for shelter, go to work for money. Working again is achieved by answering a series of quiz questions, which will be perfectly suited to your level of knowledge providing your country has not been overtaken by another. Money can be spent on food, shelter, weapons and a variety of other features in a free market economy, using product developed by companies and their employees.

The political aspects of the game seem quite tacked on, and seem to limit in game power to a small hand full of users. While there are certainly free elections each month, the power wielded by those elected can influence your game quite substantially, and there is no recourse if they perform acts that are not deemed in the best interest of your game. Effectively, you're electing a dictatorship for a short period of time.

The military aspect of this game not only seems to be the most compelling aspect of this game, but is also it's downfall. Patriotism is a fine thing, but in the game it adds an element of aggression and vitriol, particularly during armed conflict. Inevitably, the game resorts to name calling and pure racism both in forums and in news articles and associated comments. While racism is not allowed under the games terms of service, it is completely unavoidable.

There is little separation between real life and in game content for a large portion of the community, and it seems that real-world current and past events influence the decisions of many players. This is not surprising, as this is simple human nature, however this is largely the trigger for the negative aspects of racism in the game. I won't harp on this aspect of the game, as it is driven by the community and not the developers, however it is prevalent, and little is done to control it.

If you want a real time war game, I suggest one of the many online games out there. If you want a web game, I recommend anything but this. However, if you want to be a racist, this will be home.
