This game never seems to get any of the respect it whole heartedly deserves!

User Rating: 9 | Eternal Champions GEN
I know that it is now 2007 and this is a review of a Genesis game which was released in 1993. However, whenever a conversation comes up about great fighting games this one is always unfairly omitted. I am not saying that games like Mortal Kombat, Tekken , Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, or Soul Calibur don't deserve their praise. EC should be mentioned right along with them for some very good reasons. The first is that for a console game, (Eternal Champions was not based on an arcade version), Eternal Champions was extremely well polished. The action was smooth and fast. All of the characters had vastly different fighting styles and special moves which really forced a player to think about how he or she would fight each match. The battle room was the first time the fighting environment could work for or against a player in a match. You did not see this feature until much later when games went 3D. It also had a tournament mode included. No need to go and by the tournament edition. Sega put forth an amazing effort here. Unfortunately the game got lost in the media hype about Mortal Kombat hearings in Congress. This game is 2D fighting at its best.
