Finally, a good reason to own a GameCube!

User Rating: 9.2 | Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem GC
Eternal Darkness, Sanity's Requiem. Wow, that's a mouthful. But the game was one of the first I got for my crappy GameCube. In my opinion, it's the only good GameCube game other than Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. In Eternal Darkness, you play as this girl Alex who's grandfather died in his giant house of a very gruesome cause, but nobody knows why or how. So you search around and find this book made out of human skin. Sounds normal enough. Only, every time you read part of it, you get transported to that time and place and in the person's shoes who's in the story, and you have to go through their horror. More of the book gets filled in as you go on, untill you finally solve your Grandfather's death. There are a lot of very cool, very creepy parts to this game. My favorite of which is the sanity meter. When you see a ghost or anything scary, or even hear something, your sanity meter goes down. When it starts going down, it's minor effects, like the walls moving, or even bleeding. You will even hear phones ringing and see distorted images in and on the art. But it really gets good when your sanity is very low, and the cool effects happen. A couple of which are: your screen goes black and you see "Audio/Video" on your screen like the plug has been pulled; another (my favorite), suddenly you see the GameCube startup video, hinting that your GameCube has been restarted!; and the last one I can think of, a message shows up on the screen when you're fighting a baddie saying that your controller has been unplugged when it obviously hasn't. Simply put, these things can really mess with you when it's the middle of the night and you've been playing for a long time. The graphics in the game aren't bad. They don't stand out too much, but they're plenty good enough to have a great game go with them. The controls are kind of annoying, not too great considering what you have to fight. Sound wise, Eternal Darkness is very cool. It could use some more music, but it has great sound effects wherever applicable, and really creepy background noises to scare you. In the end, you'll probably spend 25 hours on this game, as you'll most likely end up playing through it a few times to get all the extras. So, with all said and done, Eternal Darkness is a very good buy, especially at the prices you can get it for now. It's not worth buying a GameCube for, but maybe it and MGS Twin Snakes are.
