Only pick up if you know what to expect.
PROS:
- Some freedom with character creation. Four character models are available for each of the seven classes, and you can create up to 30 as soon as you begin the game.
- The graphics look nice and are up to par for what a 3DS game ought to look like.
- Exploration can be fun.
- Questing and the pursue of loot is about what you'd expect of a typical JRPG.
- Game is packaged very well and comes with a soundtrack of the game.
CONS:
- Game is a text-adventure while in town and not in dungeons.
- Some may find the general lack of story, no character development, and complete lack of a protagonist a huge drawback.
- The map creating is marketed is a positive feature but is more annoying than anything.
- Navigating the map in first person is deluded by not giving you complete direction freedom; you can only go forward, back, left and right.
- Game makes you use the D-PAD a lot more than any other 3DS game when the analog stick would have been preferable.
Summary:
As a fan of Lunar, a famous JRPG from the 90s, the reminiscent packaging is what originally caught my eye and made me give the JRPG a whirl. However, unless you know you are a fan of first-person RPGs other JRPGs are on the 3DS that may be better worth your buck.
