kinda like a drug...
Positives first, Fable’s presentation is immaculate, polished to look and sound near perfection establishing its tone and setting with sound precision. Basically you’re playing a fable, and the game does a lot to immerse you into the enchanting world of medieval magic and monsters . The game integrates subtle details like the routine shopkeep who opens in the morning and locks up at night, or the warm feeling of entering the tavern as you're greeted with laughter and glowing candles. The graphics are so good it hurts. The light and shadow effects are used so damn well and they grant the game this unique, charming atmosphere that just warms up to you and grants the game its flavour. The audio is on equal par with the graphics. The feeling of an interactive fable is invigorated with a brilliant original music score that just fits like a glove and well executed dialogue spoken in cool little British accents.
That said the game has one major drawback: it lacks depth. On paper, Fable makes itself out to be an expansive, full experience ranging from alignment abilities and customisable everything to even finer details such as being able to get married, drunk or even own property or thieve. Sadly, in practice this doesn’t add a whole lot to the role-playing dimensions. The game boasts the ability to diversify your playing experience by selecting certain stats to upgrade or leaning toward a particular alignment, but ultimately you’ll be playing as the same guy, doing the same missions (although your alignment can alter the minor goals a bit). And to even greater disappointment, the storyline doesn’t stretch as far as you’d hope. It’s an easy completion within a week of casual gaming and will leave you wanting more.
But don’t get me wrong, Fable is fantastic. You'll enjoy every moment you'll get with it. The game boasts a rich personality presented with oozing charm. Scarcely do games embody this sort of thing. However, this terrific medium plays host to a somewhat shallow core role playing element and story, although fun in parts, but not solid enough to last.
You'll want more, but you won't get more.
