Good or evil, you jump headfirst into a wondrous world full of adventure.
Fable as an RPG is a bit nonstandard, because instead of instantaneously receiving EXP you must hunt down glowing orbs that fall out of enemies when you defeat them.
This may or may not settle well with some gamers, especially since said orbs are actually vulnerable to gravity and sometimes even enemies jostling them about while you're fighting them.
Here are what I consider the positives:
- The game has an almost sandbox-like style to it, where you can go around causing mischief or doing good deeds for NPCs you encounter. You are even able to buy houses, marry, and.. some other things I won't be going into with this review.
Needless to say I love games that let you explore rather than force you to follow the objectives straightforwardly.
- The choice between good or evil. It's basically a major part of the game itself and ultimately what affects your fighting style and how NPCs react to you.
If you choose to be good, your character becomes nearly angelic. Likewise if you choose to be evil, your character becomes increasingly demonic. These graphically appealing differences really make the game interesting based on what kind of character you've developed, and in my opinion make things more interesting.
- There are some interesting spells and weapons you acquire throughout the game, including element-based upgrades and the ability to slow down time.
It takes a while to really develop on magic abilities no matter what you do, but in the end it's very rewarding.
Here are what I consider major negatives:
- After a while of playing, the game gets almost insultingly simple.
There is a good spell of godly vengeance that allows you to eliminate all enemies on the screen, and an evil spell that does about the same thing.
Regardless, these spells are ludicrously overpowered, especially much later in the game when higher levels become selectable.
This could be seen as boring for players who like a challenge, and if they want the game to remain difficult, I suggest staying away from these abilities.
- Horrible, obvious glitches.
Children you sometimes rescue have unfitting grown up laughs, characters drop and break boxes just to talk to you, the game sometimes crashes often, and characters will sometimes mention quests or accomplishments from other save files (even if you are on a completely different profile and started from scratch.)
These are a majorly disastrous for the game, and hopefully if you do decide to get it, they will not plague you. (They may have been patched by now, I would not know.)
Overall, Fable is a very enjoyable game that I recommend you possibly rent before actually purchasing (if possible) but be warned that it's instability issues make it irritating to play on occasion.
