This game is horrid, there is nothing magical about this game, stay away from it.
. It's colorful and it looks decent
. Sounds like a good concept
. You can slide around in blood
The Bad:
. The stupidest control scheme I've ever played
. Awful platforming
. Ugly character models
. Story is non-existent
. Bland and unappealing look
. The camera is uncooperative
. Weak sound effects
. Shallow, repetitive and just not fun
Oh, this game. Ever play a game that just pisses you off just by thinking about it? FairyTale Fights will just about do that. This shallow, "button masher" is an absolute disgrace on the face of the earth. I'll keep this short.
Story wise, it doesn't start out great. All that happens, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, Snow White and the Naked Emperor go start killing everyone because some guy called Little Boy Tailor has stolen ther place in their stories and they want to find this guy and kill him. There is no narrative for this and no dialogue and most of it feels random. Not to mention, this is a game based on FAIRY TALES, you think there would be some narrative but nope. Story isn't everything, but jeez.
The gameplay is atrocious. You attack with the freaking RIGHT ANALOG STICK. There's four buttons the controller, LIKE THAT'S SO COMPLEX FOR US. While there are a bunch of weapons, most of them lack any impact because they all act the same and have lack-luster sound. The camera is always zoomed out, and since you're really small, it's hard to see where you are. Throw in ambsyal platforming, long levels, shallow combat, and insanely long bosses you have to face multiple times, and you have a cluster of horridness. Sure, you respawn instantly when you die, but all you lose is money and you don't even need it for the most part.I never played multiplayer, but I bet it would be more frustrating and confusing where you are, thanks to the camera and the platforming, it would probably suck.
Graphics wise, it's decent with the colors but since so much is going on, it distracts from the ambsyal gameplay. Really, a lot of the colors are bland and many of the hues don't mix well, leaving it drab. It can't decide whether it wants to be edgey or cartoon with the cel-shaded look. I guess you can say it might as well be a fairy tale version of Happy Tree Friends, just without any charm. If I had to be honest, it looks like a really good Gamecube game. REALLY GOOD. Also, the blood looks like paint? Why?
The sound is lackluster. The soundtrack is mostly made up of Jazz, of all things and doesn't fit at all and is grating to the ears at times. Some of it is decent but completely forgettable. It just doesn't fit the game's theme. It could have gone either SplatterHouse with it's metal (because you're killing things) or God of War with how the ambient tone of music fit that game so well. But what they did was dumb. Some of the sound effects are ok, like some slicing and potions you get to use, but it just sucks.
Were they jacking off when they made this game, just to flatout ruin it?! It takes away the bare principles of an action hack n slash game. Have the developers even played God of War or anything else?! Bottom line; Stay away from this game. Thank god it's a rent game.
Overall: 3.6/10
